Who Are We?
The CP Stars Swim
Team is a late spring / early summer activity for children and young
adults ages 4 to 18. It is open to residents of Champions Park, Champions
Centre Estates, Champions Park North, Champions Racquet Village, Champions
Creek and Champions Park North Estates.
Why
Do We Have A Swim Team?
Swim team is a
wonderful activity for kids and families. It helps young people learn
individual goal setting and discipline, while being part of a team
and participating in a family-based activity.
How
Does It Work?
The CP Stars are
part of the Northwest Aquatic League (NWAL), which organizes and administers
the season's activities for over 100 subdivision teams, stretching
from Baytown to IH-10, generally north of Beltway 8.
Each year, the
CP Stars are assigned to a six-team division. Each team in the division
swims a dual meet against the other teams. After 5 weeks of dual meets,
a "divisional" meet is held with all six teams. The week
after the divisional meet, a series of invitational
meets for all of NWAL are held, with entry based on individual
qualifying times. Participation in the invitational meets is optional.
Practice begins
the end of April, with team time trials the middle of
May. The dual meets usually start the third weekend in May, with the
divisional meet in late June. The invitational meets are the first weekend in July. See Meet Schedule.
Is
Swim Team Highly Competitive?
There are some
very good individual swimmers, on the CP Stars, in our division and
in NWAL. However, the CP Stars focus is on personal improvement by
each swimmer over the course of the season. Participation ribbons
are given to all swimmers at each meet, up to age 10. We also emphasize
the social opportunities afforded by participation in swim team. We
have two or three formal social events each season and several informal
gatherings.
Can
My Child Learn to Swim By Participating in Swim Team?
We strongly encourage
all parents to insure their children have basic swimming skills before
participating in swim team. Practices are held in age group sessions,
and the coaches are not able to give extensive individual instruction.
However, we encourage our coaches to offer private individual instruction
to help swimmers improve their skills. The U.S. Swimming clubs offer
swim team readiness programs in the spring ... see Premier Aquatics (PACK) and the Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club (FLEET).
Can
Serious Swimmers Participate?
At this time,
the NWAL season is open to all swimmers. For those swimmers who wish
to seriously compete, we encourage participation in an all-year program
offered by one the U.S. Swimming clubs in our area. The two most
convenient are Premier Aquatics (PACK) and the Cypress
Fairbanks Swim Club (FLEET). Please visit the web sites of these
teams for more information.
How
do I sign up for the CP Stars?
Check the registration page for more information or see a board member.
Weather Policy
According to American
Red Cross standards, all swimmers must be cleared from the pool and
the surrounding fenced-in area in the event of pending thunderstorms,
at the time of any definite sound of thunder or the sighting of lightning.
If the pool area must be cleared while swim practice is in progress,
the coaches will hold the children outside the gate area until they
are picked up by their parent or designated adult. If the weather
subsequently clears up, swim practice will
resume 30 minutes after any definite sound of thunder or sighting
of lightning.
